How to Become a Civil Engineer after 12th class

Introduction to Civil Engineering and Top Colleges:

What is Civil Engineering :

Civil engineering is one of the oldest known branches of engineering which basically deals with the planning, designing, construction and maintenance of all the infrastructure that we see in today’s world which includes work of roads, buildings, canals, bridges, dams, sewers, tunnels etc. It’s traces can be seen since times immemorial. From ancient civilizations like Harrapa and Mohan jo daro to today’s well planned modern cities, from ancient monuments to today’s jaw-dropping sky touching buildings, every single physical concrete structure is a creation of civil engineering. It is the broadest and most versatile branch of engineering which we encounter in our daily life.

We may not realize it but even a simple water drainage system is a masterpiece of  civil engineering. It defines our world and it defines it’s development. A nation with a good infrastructure will always lead the race of development. It is a very interesting profession as in this field you can leave your mark on the world, literally.

Brnaches of Civil Engineering

Since the world is developing day by day, the need of a strong infrastructure is  increasing too in various sectors. To meet the requirements of various sectors civil engineering has been further classified into branches like

Materials science and engineering– It deals with the fundamental study of materials which are used in construction like concrete and strong metals like iron.

Coastal engineering– It deals with coastal regions. It studies the processes going on the shoreline and prevents the erosion of coasts.

Construction engineering– This branch of engineering deals with infrastructure such as roads, tunnels, bridges, airports, railroads, dams etc.

Earthquake engineering– It focuses on building structures which can withstand hazardous consequences of earthquake.

Environmental engineering– It deals with the treatment of hazardous wastes and thus making our environment a safe and better place to live in.

Geo Technical engineering– This field of engineering indulges in the study of soil and rocks and analysis and construction of systems which are made of or supported by the soil.

Structural engineering– It is concerned with the construction of all structural systems and their components

Municipal or urban engineering– It deals with municipal infrastructure which includes streets, parks, sewer systems, waterworks, pavements etc.

The eligibility requirement to become a Civil Engineer:

Career Path to become a Civil Engineer:

How to become a Civil Engineer:

One must also clear state or national level entrance exams for engineering like

AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Exams)
JEE Main (Joint Entrance Exam Main)
AICET (All India Common Entrance Test) etc.

Admissions are made on the basis of ranks scored in such entrance tests

STEP 2- Get a Bachelor degree in civil engineering from a good college

STEP 3-Get licensed as a professional Engineer if you want to take on public projects. You have to clear fundamental engineering exam for that and at least four years working experience.
STEP 1- If candidate is not able to do Degree in Engineering then Get a Diploma in civil engineering from a Goverment Polytechnics

Entrance Exams for a Civil Engineer:

Entrance Examination for B.Tech in Civil Engineering :-

  • BITSAT :- Birla Institute of Technology and Science Examination
  • TNPCEE :- Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination
  • IIT JEE :- Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination

If you want to apply for this Examination then you should pass 12th standard in Science stream with Physics and Mathematics from recognized School(like CBSE) . You should score minimum 60% percentage of marks in 12th board examination .

M.Tech in Civil Engineering :-

If you want to apply for in Civil Engineering then you should pass Bachelor of Civil Engineering with Mathematics / Physics / Computer Science from recognized university . You should score more then 80% percentage of marks .

Entrance Examination for in Civil Engineering :-

  • GATE :- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering
  • TANCET :- Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test
  • PGECET :- Post Graduate Engineering Common Entrance Test
